The New Mexico Dept. of Health offers a number of free and open to the public workshops, including a year long diabetes prevention program. Read below to learn more.

The New Mexico Department of Health offers a number of free and open to the public workshops. Some of which can be brought to your church or social organization and almost all of which are now available online. We are a referral source, but do not offer these programs through our organization.   • Community members with diabetes, who are pre-diabetic, or caring for someone with diabetes are welcome. In America, most of us are pre-diabetic. Do you have diabetes and ask yourself, “What can I eat?” NMSU Cooperative Extension is offering cooking classes* for adults with diabetes. Participants will learn to plan and make healthy, delicious meals that manage carbs. This free program is sponsored by the NM Department of Health Diabetes Prevention and Control Program.

    • A FREE six-week workshop for adults interested in learning how to better manage their chronic conditions like arthritis, asthma, cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, or pain.

    • Build new relationships and learn new skills to help live a healthier life!

    • Family members and caregivers are welcome to attend.

    • This workshop is for people with type 2 Diabetes and those who care for them.

    • Workshop topics includes: Nutrition / Healthy Eating, Making an action plan, Monitoring diabetes and blood sugar, Dealing with stress, Preventing complications, Physical activity/ Exercise, Relaxation techniques, Working with your health care professional and health care system, and much more!

  • This workshop is for people who suffer with chronic pain.

    Workshop topics include:

    • Using your mind to manage symptoms

    • Getting a good night’s sleep

    • Problem-solving

    • Dealing with difficult emotions

    • Fatigue management

    • Evaluating treatments,

    • Depression management

    • Working with your health care professionals and organization

    • Weight management, and much more!

  • This workshop is for cancer survivors and caregivers.

    Workshop topics include:

    • Using your mind / relaxation

    • fatigue management

    • Dealing with difficult emotions

    • Pain management

    • Living with uncertainty

    • Communication skills

    • Making treatment decisions

    • Dealing with depression

    • Relationships, and much more!

  • This workshop is for people with HIV.

    Workshop topics include:

    • Monitoring HIV

    • Making an action plan

    • Managing fatigue

    • Making decisions

    • Working with your healthcare team

    • Relaxation body scan

    • Dealing with depression, Sex, intimacy, and telling others

    • Healthy eating,

    • Building support systems, and much more!

    • Breathing well and Managing Asthma.

    • This free and open to the public workshop assists community members in understanding asthma. Asthma is one of the most common lifelong chronic diseases.
